Amazon Marketing Service

Amazon Marketing Service was launched in 2012, to enable sellers all over the world advertise their products.  Sellers can create ads for any product from books to toys, food, DIY, sports and outdoors and more.  It is separate from amazon.com; and it can be accessed here – https://advertising.amazon.com/. You will need to login using your existing Kindle Direct Publishing account or register for one to be able to access Amazon advertising. Once you login to your account on the Amazon advertising website based on the country of your choice, you will see the following prompt:

There are 3 different ads: sponsored products, sponsored brands and lockscreen ads.  You can choose any of the 3 ads, however, for authors, the best option to go with based on my setting up ads on Amazon is sponsored brands and lockscreen ads, the decision is yours and choose the model that you think is best for you. Amazon advertising is the only platform that allows authors to advertise their titles where the readers will buy their books as opposed to other platforms.  Now, let me explain the 3 types of Amazon advertising briefly.

Amazon’s sponsored product ads show up in the results when a user searches for something, for example, here is a screenshot of a sponsored ads (showing at the bottom of the image):

One thing about the advertisement is that they are almost indistinguishable from organic search results, and what you will notice is the word “Sponsored” at the bottom of the book or products.  To enjoy this type of ad, you must have written series of books and published at least three titles, so that you can guarantee a top spot on the search result pages with the ad type.

Sponsored brands are cost per click (CPC) ads that feature your brand logo, a custom headline, and multiple products.  The ads appear in relevant shopping results and help drive discovery of your brand among customers shopping for similar products.

Sponsored products are keyword or product targeted ads that promote your individual listings and appear in shopping results and on product detail pages on Amazon.  You can use automatic targeting to help you set up your ads in minutes.

Lockscreen ads allow you to promote your eBooks directly to the customers most likely to buy your book(s).  You will engage readers with interest-targeted ads while they are on their Kindle e-readers and Fire tablets, thus making it easy for them to buy and download your titles.  See sample below:

Pay Per Click

While other advertising platforms like Google, Facebook, Instagram make you pay for impressions, Amazon advertising uses “pay-per-click” model. With this model, you can get millions of impressions on your ads, thereby gaining a lot of brand exposure, and pay nothing unless the impressions lead to a click.  With Amazon ads, you can afford to go with a broader targeting or even make mistakes without breaking the bank.  This means if you don’t get clicks on your ad, you won’t pay anything, however, this is not the goal (as every person would like to make sales).  However, with impressions, you will be able to learn the ropes of book advertising with a limited budged when you are just getting started.

Setting Up Campaign

Setting up Amazon ads campaign is quick and effective as you don’t rely on images like other advertising platforms like Facebook. Amazon advertising will use your book’s cover and metadata (title, sub-title, reviews, etc) to generate your ads.  There is no special requirement for a design or copy on your part if you go for Sponsored product ads.  All you need to do is decide on your targeting and bidding.  So, it takes less than five minutes to set up your first targeting campaign. However, manual targeting may take a bit of time since you must put together a list of keywords, products, or categories to target.
